The mission of musical programming at the National Music Museum is to highlight the instrument collection of the NMM. Live music should educate how musical instruments are designed, fabricated, and used to enliven human expression through music. Performers, with support of NMM staff as needed, will explore opportunities to point audience members toward relevant exhibits at the NMM. Proposals for future events may be made via email to Patricia Bornhofen.
The NMM's public programming is underwritten by the USD Student Association and the South Dakota Arts Council, the support for which is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism and State Development, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Note: All events are held in the Arne B. Larson Concert Hall, unless otherwise noted.

NMM Live!T. Wilson King plays vintage guitars NMM Live! 2016 season-opener: South Dakota's 'King of the guitar' T. Wilson King will play historic guitars from the National Music Museum's acclaimed collection. A revered journeyman musician who has honed his guitar-mastery playing blues, rock, folk, country, bluegrass, and jazz, for all types of audiences and venues, T. Wilson King has appeared with the likes of Ramblin' Jack Elliot, B.B. King, Santana, The Allman Brothers, Warren Zevon, Tommy Bolin, Bob Weir & Ratdog, and Keb Mo. You may have seen King main-stage at Sioux Falls' Jazzfest, Sioux City's Saturday in the Park, South Dakota Public Television's No Cover, No Minimum, or heard him on South Dakota Public Radio -- but you won't often get both this guitar master and these masterpiece NMM guitars in one place. |

NMM Live!Jory Vinikour NMM Live! Two-time Grammy Award-nominated harpsichordist Jory Vinikour will play works by Louis Couperin and Jean-Phillipe Rameau on National Music Museum's 1785 Germain harpsichord. Vinikour's debut recording for Sono Luminus, The Complete Harpsichord Works of Rameau, was nominated for a Grammy award in the category of Best Classical Solo Instrumental Recording in 2013, an honor also accorded to Vinkour's Toccatas (contemporary American works for harpsichord) in 2015. Vinikour's recent appearances include the Library of Congress and Weill (Carnegie) Recital Hall. Upcoming appearances beyond the NMM include a program for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as a concerto appearance with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony. Vinikour is also the Artistic Director and co-founder of Great Lakes Baroque in Milwaukee. He has appeared as conductor/soloist with many international symphonies, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and Juilliard. |

NMM at the Movies!Whiplash You missed it when it was first up? See it now on the big screen! Rolling Stones Magazine called Whiplash "diabolically entertaining." A young drummer aspiring to be among the best at his Juilliard-like music conservatory is driven to the breaking point by the torturous methods and expectations of his bullying instructor. Actor J.K. Simmons won an Academy Award for his role as the cruel mentor -- drill-sergeant-like Terence Fletcher. Whiplash is an intense look at the discipline sometimes involved in mastering the drums. The movie also showcases powerful drum music and an electrifying climactic scene that will nearly have you on your feet. [Note: Rated R.]

NMM Live!Kenneth Bé NMM Live! With the Shakespeare First Folio exhibit arriving at the NMM in early March, lutenist Kenneth Bé's performance will be a great prelude. Bé's program for the NMM Live! noon mini-concert, "Music for plucked instruments of the Elizabethan era," will feature lute, cittern and Renaissance guitar. The evening program, "The Elizabethan Lute," will include music composed anonymously during the period of Henry VIII and the early period of Elizabeth's reign, with works by Elizabeth's favorite lutenist John Johnson and court composer Anthony Holborne, as well as lute masterpieces by John Dowland. Bé, who studied under renowned lute players like Paul O'Dette and Nigel North, performed in the 2015 Boston Early Music Festival and has frequently played duet concerts with acclaimed lutenist Ronn McFarlane (of group Ayreheart). A Yale graduate, Bé has played the lute since 1974. He also studied art conservation and art history at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts and was a conservator for the Cleveland Museum of Art's painting collection before moving to Omaha, where he now works as a paintings conservator at the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center. |

First Folio! The Book that Gave Us ShakespeareFolger Library Shakespeare First Folio Exhibit at Get close to literary greatness! This is your opportunity to experience one of the most influential and valuable books in history, through this national traveling exhibition of Shakespeare's First Folio. The renowned Folger Library chose one location in each state to host a month-long exhibit of the historic book. South Dakota's site is University of South Dakota, and specifically, the National Music Museum. In addition to housing the Folio exhibit, the National Music Museum will showcase rare musical instruments of Shakespeare's era, from the NMM's collections. A month of special Folio programming is planned throughout the Vermillion community (concerts at the NMM, a symposium and lectures at the University, kid-centered events at the Vermillion Public Library, and more). The First Folio is the first complete collected edition of Shakespeare's plays, published in 1623--seven years after the famed playwright's death. Compiled by two of Shakespeare's fellow actors, the Folio preserves 36 of Shakespeare's plays. Without it, we would not have 18 of those plays, including Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, and Antony and Cleopatra. There are 233 known copies in the world today, with 82 copies held by the Folger Shakespeare Library. |

NMM Live! and USD PresentAyreheart Listen to the music Shakespeare might have listened to! The University of South Dakota and the National Music Museum will present acclaimed Renaissance-music group Ayreheart, on Friday, March 18th, at 7:00 p.m., as part of the programming for the touring exhibit of Shakespeare's First Folio. The group features Grammy-nominated lute player Ronn McFarlane. Performing as a quartet (vocals, two lutes, colascione, and percussion), Ayreheart will play music from the Elizabethan era, in their show "Will You Walk the Woods so Wild." Fittingly, the music of Shakespearean contemporaries John Dowland, William Byrd and John Johnson will be highlighted, as well as old ballad tunes from England, Scotland and Wales. |

NMM Live!Sigiswald Kuijken NMM Live! Join us for an extraordinary evening of Baroque masterpieces--the music of Bach, Corelli, Vivaldi, Schmelzer, and more--performed by acclaimed guest director/violinist/violist da spalla Sigiswald Kuijken and the Bach Society of Minnesota. Considered a musical giant, an early-music pioneer, innovative musician and musical philosopher, Kuijken has made historic contributions to the art of string-instrument playing--such as the technique of playing the violin "chin off" and the rediscovery of the viola da spalla. A lifelong performer, promoter and scholar of Bach, Kuijken has created groundbreaking recordings of the composer's cantatas and violin works. |

NMM Live!Tatag Gamelan Orchestra Once a year you have the opportunity to experience the NMM's community ensemble Tatag (led by musician, scholar and NMM curator Dr. Deborah Check Reeves) as they play the stunning percussion instruments of the NMM's own spectacular Kyai Rengga Manis Everist Javanese gamelan. This year, in response to popular demand, an evening Tatag concert has been added to allow more people to attend this riveting musical spectacle. |
