NMM 5283. Ocarina, Mayan tradition, Ulua Valley, Cortés, Honduras, ca. 700-900 A.D. (Late Classic Mayan Period). Unglazed, low-temperature, pit-fired earthenware clay with black markings resulting from firing process. Globular resonating duct flute with two finger holes. Separate cavity located above resonating chamber with single hole. Articulated mouthpiece with narrow slit cut above duct hole, parallel to voicing edge; duct at bottom of seated, anthropomorphic figure. Molded portion of ocarina completed first; back portion, including duct and finger holes, added when clay was sufficiently hardened to support joining the two sections.
