Details of the Upper Treble Rib
NMM 3351. Violoncello, The King, by Andrea Amati,
Cremona, after 1538. Witten-Rawlins Collection, 1984. The letters
originally painted on the upper treble rib are the last three letters
of the Latin word, "JUSTICIA" (justice). Only the letter C remains.
The other two letters were gradually worn away over the years every
time the cello was played.
Note: Click on the letter C painted on the upper treble rib to see a close-up of that letter (I and A no longer visible).
