Annotated Checklist of Flutes and Piccolos
By Auguste Buffet, Buffet-Crampon, and Buffet-Crampon & Cie, Paris

NMM 1297. Flute by Auguste Buffet, Paris, ca. 1838. Stamped on head, body, and foot: [lyre] / BUFFET / A PARIS (in oval cartouche) / [5-pointed star]. Conical. Three sections. Cocuswood, German-silver ferrules and mounts. Screw-cap. Boehm 1832 hybrid system: thirteen German-silver keys, six rows of rods and sleeves mounted on post-and-axle supports. Needle springs on all keys, except B keys, which use leaf springs. Closed keys: D and D-sharp trills, D-sharp. Articulated keys: C-sharp, B, Dorus G-sharp, c-sharp', c' (roller). Articulated ring keys: A, G, F, E, D. Lowest note c'. Total length, 669.4 mm. Sounding length, 585.3 mm. Original case. Owned by Marston Cabot Smith, Boston, 1840s-1870s. Arne B. NMM 3206. Flute by Buffet-Crampon, Paris, ca. 1849-1853. Stamped on head and upper body: [lyre] / BUFFET / Crampon / A PARIS (in oval cartouche) / BC (scripted monogram). Conical. Three sections. African blackwood, German-silver ferrules and mounts. Graduated screw-cap. Boehm 1832 hybrid system: fourteen German-silver keys, five rows of rods and sleeves mounted on post and axle supports. Closed keys: D and D-sharp trills, D-sharp. Articulated keys: C-sharp, Briccialdi thumb B-flat, B, Dorus G-sharp, c-sharp', c' (roller). Articulated ring keys: A, G, F, E, D. Lowest note c'. Stamped on head: [lyre] / BUFFET / Crampon & Cie / A PARIS (in oval cartouche) / BC (scripted monogram); on body: [lyre] / BUFFET / Crampon & Cie / A PARIS (in oval cartouche) / BC (scripted monogram) / BREVETES / S.G.D.G.; on tuning slide: BC BC (scripted monograms). Conical. Three sections. African blackwood, German-silver ferrules and mounts. Screw-cap. Metal lining in head joint and telescoping tuning slide. Boehm 1832 hybrid system: 12 German-silver keys, four rows of rods and sleeves mounted on post and axle supports. Closed keys: D and D-sharp trills, G-sharp, D-sharp. Stamped on head and body: [lyre] / BUFFET / Crampon & Cie / A PARIS (in oval cartouche) / BC (scripted monogram) / MADE IN FRANCE / H.P.; on tuning slide: BC BC (scripted monograms) / MADE IN FRANCE / H.P. Conical. Three sections. African blackwood, German-silver ferrules and mounts. Screw-cap. Metal lining in telescoping tuning slide, partially in head joint. Six German-silver keys in post and axle mounts. Closed keys: long c", B-flat, G-sharp, long F, short F, D-sharp. No articulated keys. Lowest note d'. Total length, 308.6 mm. Sounding length, 256.9 mm. Original, pistol-shaped, leather case. First piccolo owned by William Kincaid (1895-1967), principal flute of Philadelphia Orchestra, 1921-1960, whose initials, BK, are scratched into body. Gift of Robert F. Cole, Montello, Wisconsin, 1998.

Stamped on head and body: [lyre] / BUFFET / Crampon & Cie / A PARIS (in oval cartouche) / BC (scripted monogram) / MADE IN FRANCE / L.P.; on tuning slide: BC BC (scripted monograms) / MADE IN FRANCE / L.P. Conical. Three sections. African blackwood, German-silver ferrules and mounts. Screw-cap. Metal lining in telescoping tuning slide. Six German-silver keys, with post and axle mounts. Stamped on tuning slide and body in gold lettering: [5-pointed star] / SISTEMA / Buffet Crampon / PARIS (in oval cartouche) / [5-pointed star]. Conical. Three sections. African blackwood, German-silver ferrules and mounts. Screw-cap. Metal lining in head and portion of telescoping tuning slide. Six German-silver keys in post and axle mounts. Closed keys: c'', B-flat, G-sharp, long F, short F, D-sharp. No articulated keys. Lowest note d'. Total length, 325.8 mm. Sounding length, 271.0 mm. Gift of John Powers, Carbondale, Colorado, 1993.
