Annotated Checklist of Flutes and Piccolos by
V. Kohlert Sons, Graslitz
Dating Kohlert Instruments
No serial number lists are available by which to date instruments by V. Kohlert Sons. Therefore, the dating of instruments on this checklist is based upon the following:
1) the specific designation of the country of origin, according to the following general guidelines provided to the NMM by the Embassy of the Czech Republic, Washington, DC:
-
before 1918, Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia, were part of Austria.
Therefore, all instruments marked “Austria” or just “Bohemia” were made before 1918 (with one possible exception: some products made between 1938-1939 were also marked “Bohemia”).
-
Czechoslovakia came into being on October 28, 1918.
Therefore, instruments marked “Czecho-Slovakia” or “Czechoslovakia” were made after 1918.
2) the expositions referred to with all three medallions stamped on each of these flutes and piccolos can be identified and dated:
- Chicago, World's Columbian Exposition, 1893;
- London, Greater Britain Exhibition, 1899;
- Paris, Exposition Universelle, 1900;
- Therefore, all the flutes and piccolos on this checklist must have been made in or after 1900.
Instruments on checklists below are listed in serial number order
