NMM 1123. Appalachian dulcimer attributed to [Yethro?], Harlan County, Kentucky, ca. 1885-1900. Double-bulged sound box, upper bout narrower than lower bout. Carved-out pegbox with simplified scroll; friction pegs. U-shaped fretboard/box. Four of 4 strings fretted on 17 frets. Arne B. Larson Collection, 1979.

NMM 1122. Appalachian dulcimer by J. E. Thomas, Bath, Kentucky, July 4, 1912. Double-bulged sound box, upper bout narrower than lower bout. Carved-out pegbox with simplified scroll; hand-carved, wooden friction pegs. Incised lines along edges of top and bottom, as well as fretboard. Two of 3 strings fretted on 17 frets. Arne B. NMM 4358. Appalachian dulcimer by Mr. Wimer, near New Martinsville, West Virginia, ca. 1925-1950. Double-bulged sound box, upper bout narrower than lower bout. Angular sides with concave, cut-away corners. Carved out pegbox with simplified scroll; carved, eight-pointed star on each side. Fretboard missing. Three, laterally-inserted friction pegs (missing). NMM 13074. Appalachian dulcimer by Raleigh Stokes, St. Paul, Minnesota, October 1967. Double-bulged sound box, upper bout narrower than lower bout. Carved-out pegbox with simplified scroll; machine tuning pegs. Top- and back-wood cut on diagonal. Solid fretboard, not carved into U-shaped fretbox. Inlaid wooden position markings at 3rd, 4th, and 6th frets. Three of 3 strings fretted on 17 frets. Paul and Jean Christian Collection, 2006.

NMM 13075. Double (courting) Appalachian dulcimer, U.S.A., ca. 1975. Rectangular sound box with slightly convex sides. Two pegheads, integral to fretboards, positioned at opposite ends and sides of sound box; machine tuning pegs. U-shaped fretboards/boxes straddle joints of three-piece top. NMM 5947. Appalachian dulcimer by Bill Davis, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, 1976. Double-bulged sound box, upper and lower bout of equal size. Carved-out pegbox with simplified scroll; friction pegs. U-shaped fretboard/box. Celluloid nut and bridge. Five of 5 strings fretted on 17 frets. Gift of Lydia Lund, Wilmette, Illinois, in memory of her husband, Armon Lund, 1996.
