Eight auspicious symbols on a pair of Tibetan finger cymbals

Eight auspicious symbols on a pair of Tibetan finger cymbals

NMM 10069.  Finger cymbals (ting shags), Tibet, 20th century. Two spun-silver cymbals with the mantra, Om Mani Padme, in Tibetan characters on the underside of each cymbal. Eight auspicious symbols circle the top of each cymbal, in low relief. These small cymbals are used during personal meditation and offering. Their sound is said to summon the presence of spirit-beings and is thought of as an offering symbolic of the five senses. Usually played by gently striking the outer edge of cymbals together, while held horizontally. Diameter: 68.4 mm. Gift of Western International Music, Greeley, Colorado, 2001.
