Ornately-carved Clarinet Bell, ca. 1800
NMM 4146. Clarinet bell by Carobi, Clusone (a
mountain town northeast of
Bergamo), Italy, ca. 1800. Boxwood. The remarkable
carving features a pipe organ surmounted by an angel with spread wings,
eleven musicians playing brass, wind, and stringed
instruments, and three saints. Two complete Carobi clarinets survive in
the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg, Germany, and the LaScala
Collection in Milan, Italy. A second Carobi clarinet bell survives at the
G. Verdi Conservatory in Milan. Gift of
Bernhard von Hünerbein, Cologne, Germany, 1987.
